ARCADIA, Fla. A second victim died following a three-vehicle wreck that shut down State Road 31 near County Road 760A on March 2, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Roland Smith, 50, of Greenwich, Rhode Island, succumbed to his injuries Wednesday at Lee Memorial Hospital, according to the FHP. He was a passenger in 83-year-old Eugene Amaral’s Nissan Altima.

The wreck took place shortly before 2 p.m. Robbie Alsobrook, 56, of Avon Park, was traveling south on State Road 31 when Amaral cut in front of him and struck the front of his semi-truck.

The Nissan skidded off the road and landed on its roof in a nearby ditch, troopers said.

After the collision, the semi-truck spun out and sideswiped 38-year-old Lois Stanley’s Dodge Caravan.

Amaral was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital along with Smith.

Gail Amaral, of West Greenwich, Rhode Island, was also killed in the crash.

Charges are pending an investigation.
