Immokalee group urges immigrants to have emergency plan

IMMOKALEE, Fla. The community is preparing for a possible increase in deportations after President Trump’s implementation of stricter U.S. immigration laws.

Guadalupe Social Services hosted the Immigration Emergency Plan meeting Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church to make sure people in the community are prepared for a possible encounter with immigration officials.

“They’re afraid,” said case worker Maria Vega. “They say, ‘Well, I don’t try to walk around, I’m really scared to be deported and leave my kids alone and this country and never see them again.'”

While Vega wants her clients to be ready for anything, she also wants them to continue with their daily lives.

“Don’t be afraid,” she said. “Try to live your live everyday, but be prepared. Have everything in a safe place and everything you may need. But go to work, live your life and take your kids to school.”
