San Carlos Park man faces charges in deadly crash

FORT MYERS, Fla. A 46-year-old man was arrested Thursday morning in connection to a deadly crash on Interstate 75, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened on Aug. 7 when San Carlos Park resident Brian Canfield allegedly drove the wrong way on Interstate 75 and hit another vehicle. Anne Shifley, 34, later succumbed to her injuries, according to the FHP.

Tristan Matot witnessed the crash and tried to help. She held Shifley as she took her final breath.

“She was a beautiful soul and her life was taken too soon,” Matot said. “I just hope that her family has found peace, or will find peace once he is, you know charged fully for his actions.”

Brian Canfield faces charges of driving under the influence, manslaughter, vehicular homicide, DUI property damage, and possession of a controlled substance, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said. He’s scheduled to appear in court March 27.

He’s in custody with no bond set.
