Run to Home Base helps veterans at JetBlue Park

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Hundreds of baseball fans hit the field at JetBlue Park Saturday for the first Run to Home Base fundraiser in Florida.

The Run to Home Base Florida will directly benefit Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program dedicated to helping veterans who suffer from symptoms like PTSD, traumatic brain injuries and depression when returning from combat, and their efforts in Southwest Florida.

“Social support does wonders in the mental health world,” said Armando Hernandez, Home Base’s program manager. “When the community comes around and really rallies together to bring something, you pull of something like this.”

As part of the fundraiser, participants ran various routes throughout the park and finished when they crossed home plate.

Also participating were dozens of law enforcement officials from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, many of whom are also veterans.
