Red tide in Punta Gorda prompts cleanup efforts

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — The City of Punta Gorda is organizing a volunteer fish cleanup initiative from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.

Fish killed by red tide have created an unappealing look and smell in the city’s canals.

Volunteers are asked to bag the dead fish and bring them to vacant lots for dumpster disposal, according to a city press release. Materials will be provided by the city and can be picked up at the Public Works Yard on 3130 Cooper St. and the PGI Civic Association on 2001 Shreve St.

Volunteers can bring fish to the following locations:

  • PGI vacant lot 26 between 229 and 2281 Gulfview Road,
  • PGI vacant lot 33A adjacent to 2857 Don Quixote Drive
  • PGI vacant lot 42, between 5810 and 5750 Almar Drive
  • Vacant lot 21 next to 3717 Candia Drive.

For more information, call the City of Punta Gorda Public Works Department at 941-575-5050 between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
