FORT MYERS, Fla. — A fiery crash on Michael G. Rippe Parkway and Briarcliff Road left one person dead and another injured Friday night, shutting down the northbound lanes, according to the Florida Highway Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Pascal Davis, 29, of Fort Myers, was driving in the outside southbound lane on Michael G. Rippe Parkway when his car began to drift off the road, FHP said. Davis over-corrected, sending his car careening across all three southbound lanes, over the median and into northbound traffic, FHP said. His car entered the direct path of a second car, which was traveling northbound in the center lanes, according to FHP.

The front of Davis’ car struck the front of the second car, which caused both cars to spin in opposite directions, FHP said. A third car, which was driving directly behind the second car, then hit the back of the second car, according to FHP.

The second cars caught fire. The people inside, driver John Anderson, 33, of Punta Gorda, and his passenger Erin Gorney, 26, of Naples, were freed from the vehicle before it was engulfed in flames then taken to separate hospitals. Anderson was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, troopers said. Gorney was taken to Gulf Coast Hospital where she died, FHP said.

Davis and the driver of the third car, Nhanh Brown, 66, of Fort Myers, were unharmed.

Everyone was wearing a seat belt and the wreck is not believed to be alcohol related.
