Clewiston football player returns after brain injury

CLEWISTON, Fla. — A Clewiston High School football player returned to the sidelines Friday after suffering a traumatic brain injury in September.

Devon Jackson, 17, was rushed to emergency brain surgery after having headaches and vomiting on the team bus. Jackson had a brain hemorrhage from a hard hit earlier in the season.

“All I know is what I remember and I ended up getting pancaked by a lineman,” Jackson said. “I fell straight on my head and it was an instant pain.”

The staples are still embedded into Jackson’s skull and he is still trying to walk normal.

“The whole accident weakened my right side so my right arm and my right leg,” Jackson said. “It’s like when I first woke up, I couldn’t move it. Over time, I built that strength and built that strength like almost to normal.”

Jackson told WINK News that his high school’s support was beautiful to see and advises his teammates to be safe playing football.

Unfortunately, doctors said Jackson can’t play football anymore. He is currently searching for another doctor to remove the staples and is hoping to return to school soon.
