Stringfellow Road reopens in both directions following crash

BOKEELIA, Fla. — A crash involving a vehicle fire shut Stringfellow Road in both directions at Durrance Road for more than three hours on Thursday, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said.

The wreck along Pine Island’s major north-south artery took place at about 11 a.m., according to the sheriff’s office. Crews were letting northbound and southbound traffic use one lane on an alternating basis before the second lane was reopened just past 4 p.m.

At least one person was hurt, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

A strong odor emanated from the scene, and a hazardous materials crew responded to help with cleanup.

Nearly 30 students who couldn’t be taken home due to the lane closure were temporarily taken to Mariner High School, the School District of Lee County said.
