PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – A garbage truck was involved in a fatal accident that shut down a road off Kings Highway, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

William Frederick, 32 of Punta Gorda, was killed in the wreck after speeding down the single northbound lane of Loveland Boulevard, FHP said.

The accident happened shortly after 5 p.m. near Moses Court, FHP said when Frederick drove through a puddle and into the grass shoulder of the road before his dark Ford Mustang began to spin, FHP said.

The spinning car then went into the one southbound lane in the path of a Waste Management truck. The garbage truck driver, Paulino Ortego of Lehigh Acres, tried to pump his brakes and steer away from the spinning Mustang, but the two vehicles still crashed, according to FHP.

Ortego then crashed his car into a row of trees off the road.

Frederick was discovered dead at the scene.

Drivers were asked to find alternate routes as Loveland Boulevard was shut down near the wreck.
