FORT MYERS, Fla. — A driver who hit and killed a 16-year-old Fort Myers High School student who was trying to board his school bus pleaded no contest to civil charges Thursday.

Cape Coral resident Zackery Treinin, 23, had his driver’s license suspended for six months, must pay a $1,000 fine and is required to take a driving class for his role in the death of Cameron Mayhew. It’s unclear if Treinin will face criminal charges, but Mayhew’s family intends to pursue the case further.

The bus was stopped and had extended its stop sign when the 2003 Chrysler Treinin was driving hit Mayhew shortly before 6 a.m. June 1 near the corner of Pine Ridge Road and Bombay Lane, a Florida Highway Patrol report said. Mayhew was taken to a hospital and died the next day.

Mayhew’s father was in tears as he walked out of the hearing and expressed displeasure with a punishment that he perceives as too lenient.

“We loved him you know? He was my son,” Michael Mayhew said. “… He got a $1,000 fine, so the value of my son’s life is $1,000 dollars?”

Treinin, through his attorney, declined comment.
