FORT MYERS, Fla. – The actions of one driver have given way to a Sherry Steven’s heartbreak ahead of a new school year.

Stevens’ lost her son, 16-year-old Cameron Mayhew, after the teenager was hit while trying to board his bus June 1. The bus was stopped and had extended its stop sign when a 2003 Chrysler, driven by 23-year-old Zackery Treinin of Cape Coral, hit the Fort Myers High School student, an FHP report said.

Mayhew died the next day just a week before classes ended.

His mother said the first summer without Mayhew has been tortuous. Stevens passes the spot near the corner of Pine Ridge Road and Bombay Lane every single day because it is the only route to get to her home.

“It’s horrible. I could be having an okay day — it’s one way in and one way out. I have to pass through this. I have to relive the accident scene every day,” she said.

With more than 90,000 Lee County students heading back to school Wednesday, Stevens said it is difficult knowing her son won’t be one of them.

“I wasn’t there. That makes it hard,” she said.

The mother hopes drivers will make safety a priority in 2016.

“I’ll never get another day with my son,”she said. “Take your time. Leave early.”

Treinin is facing charges for failing to stop for a school bus, according to FHP.
