New city for Lee County? Group explores NFM incorporation

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Civic Association in North Fort Myers is exploring the possibility of incorporating.

“It’s home rule, control over your own destiny,” said Joe Mazurkiewicz, who has advised dozens of communities on incorporation. “Establish levels of service, protect the unique characteristic of our community. The big drawback is always the unknown.”

Mazurkiewicz notes funding a new city takes taxpayer money away from everyone in Lee County.

“If North Fort Myers were to incorporate, Lee County would lose state revenue and all the cities in Lee County would lose some portion of that state-shared revenue.”

Some citizens are in favor of the idea.

“We’d be able to vote for things that would happen for this community instead of voting on the whole entity,” said Frank Wait. “It could be a plus for us.”

Incorporation requires a community to pay for a feasibility study and a survey of citizens, as well as hiring attorneys and possibly lobbyists. All that in turn requires the backing of the state legislature and then approval by voters in a referendum.
