BUSHNELL, Fla. (AP) – Sheriff’s officials in central Florida say a 58-year-old man is recovering after an alligator attacked him.

The attack happened around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Bushnell after the man found the gator on his property and shot it.

WESH reports that when the man moved closer to see if the gator was dead, it lunged at him and bit him on the right leg. The man was taken to a hospital in Ocala for treatment.

A trapper from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission euthanized the alligator.

The attack comes a week after an alligator killed a 2-year-old Nebraska boy who was vacationing with his family at Disney World outside Orlando.

Bushnell is northwest of Orlando near Interstate 75.
