FORT MYERS, Fla. – A 23-year-old woman was killed in a shooting Monday morning in the Southward Village community, Fort Myers police said.

Lalita Odom was found shot to death behind a home on the 3000 block of Dora Street around 8 a.m., police said.

Neighbors say Odom was mother to a 5-month-old and a 2-year-old, both of whom were inside the home at the time Odom was shot. Gracie Scurry said she heard screaming then saw two people fighting.

“I heard this screaming saying ‘No, no, no’ and she’s fighting,” Gracie Scurry said. “I look like this and they’re fighting. They’re fighting and then I see this dude — this boy — he shot… And I said ‘No, he’s shooting the lady! He’s shooting the lady!”

Jackie Scurry, Gracie’s daughter, called police.

“All of the sudden my mom says she heard a gunshot and once she heard the gunshot she yelled ‘Yo, call 9-1-1! This man just shot this woman,” Jackie Scurry said. “When I looked down there I see the young lady laying on the ground.”

Neighbors say Odom did not live in Southward Village community and she was just visiting a friend who lives on Dora Street.
