DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – Police say a 21-month-old girl is dead and the child’s mother has been injured in Daytona Beach after being struck by an elderly driver recently reported as missing and endangered.

Daytona Beach police told local media outlets that 85-year-old Ray Beams was driving Monday when he struck an SUV, crossed a median and drove onto a sidewalk, striking 24-year-old Christian Sims as she pushed the toddler in a stroller.

Police say Sims and her daughter Iris Barnes were dragged under the car before it crashed into a tree. The woman and child were taken to the hospital, where the toddler died. Sims’ injures were described as serious.

Beams, who police say was reported missing and endangered in nearby Port Orange, was hurt along with the SUV’s driver, 63-year-old Shirley Wilson.
