MGN IMMOKALEE, Fla. (AP) – The Southern Poverty Law Center has filed a lawsuit against the Collier County School District on behalf of immigrant parents, who say their children were placed into an adult English program that offered no opportunity to earn credit toward a high school diploma. The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in federal court. It says the district – home to both the wealthy city of Naples and a large farmworker population in southwest Florida – violated state and federal laws. When families tried to enroll their children into a high school, administrators said the kids were eligible to attend a technical school for an adult English language class. The lawsuit said there was no instruction in basic subjects. The Collier County School district says it doesn’t comment on pending litigation.
