FORT MYERS, Fla.- Murders, shootings, and gang violence have plagued Fort Myers for years. With a number of high-profile crimes still unsolved, can the Fort Myers Police Department make a change?

The city is currently considering spending $150,000 to study how the department investigates and solves crimes.

“Violent crime has been an issue for Fort Myers,” Fort Myers Mayor Randy Henderson said. “We want to do better.”

The city manager wants to hire Freeh Group International Solutions, founded by Louis Freeh former director of the FBI, to complete the study.

Freeh would have veteran, former law enforcement officers study the investigative functions of FMPD.

“What are modern-day best practices? How can we gain the trust of our public?” Henderson added.

“We’re a pretty complex city now, I think, and a larger city,” said resident Richard Clark, who is in favor of the study. “In the scheme of the population and size of our community, I think it’s warranted.”

Others believe the money could be better used in job training for those released from prison or “more manpower. If they want to spend that much money, hire more police officers,” said resident Janet Maxwellmore.

City leaders say they owe it to themselves, the new police chief, and the public to know, how is the agency performing?

“While it is a lot of money, I believe we are compelled to go through this exercise so that we can understand how to make Fort Myers better,” Henderson said.

The Fort Myers City Council has not yet voted on the study.
