FORT MYERS, Fla.- Open-heart surgery has been the standard treatment for heart valve disease, but that isn’t an option for some high risk patients. Now there is another option, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). It’s a procedure that allows physicians to place a new aortic valve by inserting a catheter through a very small incision, under conscious sedation. Dr. Brian Hummel, a surgeon with Lee Memorial Health System, stopped by the studio today to tell us more about this groundbreaking procedure.
