‘You’re going to hell’ FSW students say men preached on campus

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Some students at Florida SouthWestern State College went home crying on Thursday after they say two men started preaching and verbally attacking people on campus.

“They attacked homosexuality,” said Maria Espinoza.

“If you wore a tattoo, they would assault you saying ‘you’re sinning,’ you know, ‘you’re going to hell,'” said Miesha Lott.

Students and faculty say the two men, who claimed they were Christians, were on campus preaching.

“Reading off bible verses,” another student described. “They were saying, ‘oh if you show your legs, you’re a whore.'”

Feelings were hurt, but did the outsiders violate any laws?

“Free speech is great and it’s a right we all deserve to have, but we need to be responsible in how we use it,” Espinoza said.

Teresa Morgenstern, director of communications at FSW, says the men have been on campus before, that’s completely within their right, but attacking students is not.

“A couple of students did come to us and say they felt they were being singled out and called names, so we immediately sent additional staff, some of our directors including myself and our public safety officers and the two gentlemen who were here were then warned,” Morgenstern said. “If they single out students or try to point out or call names, they will be escorted off the campus immediately.”

Many students say they are proud of their fellow students who responded by either walking away, choosing words to voice their disdain or pray for the men using the hateful words.

Morgenstern said the men have been on campus all week and she is not sure who they are or their affiliation.
