NAPLES, Fla. – A Naples officer lost his badge after years of habitually violating policies, the law enforcement agency said.

Former Naples Police Department officer Russel Ayers was accused of lying during an investigation into the high-profile shooting and suicide, according to NPD reports.

Ayers tried to control his breathing during a polygraph test for an investigation into the theft of a colleague’s handgun, according to an internal affairs report.

Ayers told the Florida Department of Law Enforcement that his colleague, Robert Young, was a criminal who was involved in the death of his ex-wife Amy Young, reports said.

Young was shot and injured in July 2015 by her boyfriend Officer Luis Monroig who then killed himself. Ayers was also a person of interest in Young’s high-profile case.

He was also accused of making malicious statements about the department, reports said.
