Businesses say local contaminants clouding North FM tap water

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. – A gas company leaked contaminants into the drinking water of nearby businesses, North Fort Myers business owners said Thursday.

The condition of the water — cloudy, orange-ish and smelling of grease — has some business owners on Interstate Court near Interstate-75 looking into temporary alternatives.

A man called Lee County Health Department accusing a diesel fuel company off Interstate Court for causing the contamination.

Lee County Health Department is leading an investigation into the water. The Department of Environmental Protection is also involved, a state official said Thursday.

Not all businesses in the area were affected, but some business owners said they have had to purchase cases of fresh drinking water to avoid the discolored tap water.

“I think that somebody should be responsible to pay for stuff like this,” a local resident Mike Tucciarone said. “Why should we have to go out and buy bottled water when we should be getting city water that we can drink?”
