UPS using golf carts to deliver packages this holiday season

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- In a rush to get your Christmas gifts delivered on time, squads of UPS golf carts will be delivering packages this holiday season.

“The employees love it, the customers are like, ‘Oh my gosh, there’s a golf cart driving around the road!’ You know it’s great,” said Shawn Bonenberger, UPS business manager in Port Charlotte.

The UPS golf carts and their trailer are stored in pods, the cart is then loaded with packages and drivers begin their rounds.

“This allows us to put the packages on the street quicker and get them into customers hands during the day instead of at night with a large truck going through their neighborhood,” said Bonenberger.

The UPS in Port Charlotte says golf cart deliveries are a growing demand. Nearly 50 golf carts deliver at least 60 packages every day.

“We actually have communities calling us, ‘Hey! how come we don’t have a golf cart?'” said Bonenberger.

The golf carts hit the streets back in 2009, UPS says packages are now delivered faster
and it’s better for the environment.

“Of course it’s green fuel savings for us running the truck, and it’s easier for us to train someone running a golf cart than operate one of our vehicles,” said Bonenberger.

UPS began its holiday delivery plan in the middle of October, drivers will continue using golf carts until after the holiday season.
