School board looking at other sites for new Bonita high school

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla.- The Lee County School Board is looking at two other sites for a brand new Bonita Springs high school.

Originally, the school district had been looking into eleven sites, but decided only one was a viable option. Now, after opposition from nearby gated communities, the board is now looking at two other sites closely.

“We’re very encouraged and optimistic about this,” said Fred Forbes, Hunters Ridge resident.

The two sites are on Terry Street. One is county-owned land on Terry Street and Kent Road, near the Bonita YMCA and the other is a district-owned property near Tower Road.

The Bonita Area Chamber of Commerce held a meeting Monday evening to discuss the project. The meeting was invitation only, leaving the residents of Hunters Ridge once again frustrated.

“I believe in education and believe in making sure we have the best site possible, but you can’t do that through closed meetings,” said resident Fran Mainella.
