Local Boy Scouts credited with saving two lives

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – Two Boy Scouts and their Scoutmaster are being called heroes for saving two boys who were drowning at a creek in Hendry County.

The boyscouts ran to help, when others wouldn’t.

“I’m real proud of those boys,” said Troop 255 Scoutmaster, Chris Danielson. “They did a great job.”

On a camping trip at Fisheating Creek near Palmdale, Boy Scout Troop 255 heard a frightening sound.

“All of a sudden, a couple of kids in the lake were yelling for help,” said Scout Jacob Roberts.

One boy got tired from swimming.

“He went under the water twice,” said Scout Joe Scavone.

The other boy was caught in heavy weeds.

“The water was about 7 feet where he was at,” said Danielson. “He was only 20 feet from the shore, but 7 feet deep was way too deep for him to stand up in.”

So, 16-year-old Roberts and 13-year-old Scavone decided they had to help.

“Joe and I ran over,” said Roberts. “I got his arm over me and dragged him out of the weeds.”

Danielson reached the other boy just in time.

“The one I pulled, he went down twice already and went down a third time,” said Danielson. “They didn’t have any adults with them at all. They probably wouldn’t have been going home.”

Roberts and Scavone both credit their life-saving skills to the Boy Scouts and encourage other young men to get involved.

“I want to be in the military and Boy Scouts taught me a lot about stuff on survival and just being
a good person in general,” said Roberts.

“You can learn a lot of important life lessons,” said Scavone.

The young men lived by the Boy Sout motto, being prepared when it mattered most.

Danielson says he’ll put Roberts’ and Scavone’s names up for an award through the National Boy Scouts of America.
