Juvenile arrested in Cape Coral home burglary

CAPE CORAL, Fla.- A juvenile is under arrest in connection with a home burglary on the 2700 block of SW 54th Terrace, confirmed Cape Coral police.

Just before 10 a.m., 17-year-old Reed Harris says he returned home to grab some books he had left inside.

“Saw a key was in the door, which was pretty peculiar because my brothers had already left for school,” said Harris, “opened the door and there was an intruder standing right by that door.”

Harris adds, “I walked in and he went and hid in my brothers closet. While he was in there, I went in my dads room and to call the cops and look for a bat or something.”

The teen says the burglar then ran out of the home’s lanai. Police caught up with the suspect a short time later at Ida Baker High School.

Harris says he recognized the burglar as a friend of their neighbor’s son. He says the burglar may have stolen one of the keys the family used to hide under a mat, which went missing a while ago. Since the summer, Harris says the home has been burglarized multiple times but there was never a sign of forced entry.

“Sometimes I leave a $20 on my dresser, it would be gone when I got home. And my dad had money taken from him.”

Cape Coral police have not released the identity of the suspect.
