Man killed outside Fort Myers 7-Eleven

FORT MYERS, Fla.- A man was shot in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven on the 5300 block of Cleveland Avenue early Sunday morning.

Store employees say there was an altercation outside followed by shots being fired. Friends of the victim identified him as Eddie Martinez. One neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, said Martinez was trying to break up a fight when he was shot.

“From what I understand, it was over two women. Two women got in a fight and he broke ’em up, and two guys tried to jump him and he told the guys let them fight one on one, and he got shot from the side.”

“If he was with a friend of his that was helping to break up a fight, then that’s him. That describes him 100 percent. Either one of us, if someone was here on the yard giving us any trouble he’d be over there,” said Randy Volovlek, Martinez’s neighbor.

Sources say Martinez was shot in the chest and paramedics performed CPR on him, but he later died at the emergency room.

The Fort Myers Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation. If you have any information, call Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477).
