BARBERVILLE, Fla. (AP) – A passenger fired shots at deputies during a central Florida traffic stop late Monday, and they returned fire, killing him, according to officials.

The driver – a pregnant woman – was wounded in the crossfire, and she’s cooperating with investigators but still faces criminal charges, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. The pickup truck they were in had been reported stolen from a dealership on the Florida Panhandle.

The driver was identified Tuesday as 19-year-old Shannon Murphy. The dead passenger was identified as 26-year-old Timothy Wagner. Both are from Marion, Virginia.

Deputy William Kretzer pulled over the pickup west of Daytona Beach, and Deputy Daniel Sweeley responded as backup, officials said.

They tried to talk to the couple, and that’s when the man fired, authorities said. The deputies shot back, and the woman was hit in the shoulder by one of three bullets fired, officials said.

The deputies weren’t injured, and they’re on administration leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates.

Kretzer is a 13-year veteran of the sheriff’s office and Sweeley has worked there for almost four years.

The man, woman and both deputies are white, according to the sheriff’s office.
