Drones soaring across Southwest Florida skies

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Drones have been seen more and more flying around the world and across Southwest Florida. Now one local company is working to better educate the public and teach the future of the drone industry.

Founded by Daniel Barres, Soaring Sky recently held their first ever Southwest Florida Drone Day at Oasis High School and invited the public to learn about drones and the multitude of functions they play in our world.

“There’s a huge opportunity and millions of applications, where drones can be used anywhere from the enthusiast to the professional,” said Barres. The public had the chance to learn from Soaring Sky experts, ask questions and even pilot their own drone.

Ryan Cowell, a drone pilot and instructor with Soaring Sky, says hosting days like Drone Day are important to help teach people more about what’s flying above and how they can use them safely. “There’s a lack of education in the industry right now, a lot of people are buying drones on-line without really knowing what they’re buying,” said Cowell.

Instructors like Cowell along with the Soaring Sky team are taking things to greater heights though. Not just hosting drone days but educating the future of the industry by teaching a Drone Technology class at Oasis High School. Giving students like Josh Gordon, a hands on approach to drones and exploring a future in the industry.

“It really inspired me to kind of explore more options, so possibly a drone career, possibly other technology careers,” said Gordon. Soaring Sky knows that the drone industry is taking off to newer and exciting heights everyday, estimating that by 2019 we could see drone airways above us, similar to highways on land.

“We’re seeing advancements every month, with the software and the firmware that goes into some of these drones and just the overall capabilities of the drones,” said Cowell. Adding that the days of seeing drones do more than shoot video, like deliver packages or even pizza to your front door is not that far off.
