2015 hurricane season less than 48 hours away

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Monday, June 1 is the official start of the 2015 hurricane season.

The last hurricane to hit Southwest Florida was Wilma in 2005.  Now 10 years later, hardware stores in the area are hoping to educate residents on how protect themselves and their homes.

For some residents like Mary Ann Baillargeon, it will be her first hurricane season. She’s lived in Southwest Florida for less than a year.

“It terrified me to hear about all this, and what goes on, you really do have to be prepared.”

She finds the hurricane preparedness event, hosted by the Home Depot, to be helpful and informative.

“Just get a box together, and have it all sitting there and if it hits, we’re ready,” said Baillargeon.

Trevor Larsen works at the Home Depot. He says there are some items people don’t typically think about like toilet paper or a charcoal grill.

“When the power’s out, I have to eat still. Having a grill, you can cook anything,” said Larsen.
