Body found in rubble, neighbors want answers

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. – Neighbors are desperate for answers after a Fort Myers Beach Home went up in a ball of flames.

Investigators say they found a woman’s body under the rubble. Friends fear it’s a person they know very well.

Deputies are on scene Monday night and will remain there until the autopsy of the women’s body is released.

An explosion so large, so hot, it melted the siding off a neighboring home. Investigators confirms three different explosions caused the Anchorage Street house to burn to ash.

“To hear that it was an explosion, that it was possibly a propane tank… is really scary,” said Donna Fagan, who lives in Fort Myers Beach.

Investigators say a propane tank may have sparked the flames, along with a car in the garage. The fire was so destructive, investigators don’t know exactly where it started.

“I heard two big explosions. One went ‘ba doom,’ and the other was really big and I think it was the car,” said a teenager who heard the explosion.

Family and friends gathered outside the duplex Monday as construction crews tore down what’s left. A women’s body and a dog were found among the rubble. Loved ones fear, they knew who the deceased is.

“A house is a house and I know she rents there and it can always be replaced, but a person, that’s really important,” said Fagan.

Two other people who lived in this duplex went to the hospital, one of them is out Monday night.

“I mean we’re family here, it just… you know, when one of our family members, something happens like this, it’s tragic for all of us here at the whale,” said Nick Fisher, manager of The  Beached Whale.

A memorial grows Monday night in front of the home. The Beached Whale restaurant will hold a fundraiser for the victims on June 2.
