WINK News getting more answers about Cape Coral apartment explosion

Published: Updated:

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Neighbors are demanding answers after a mysterious explosion rocked a Cape Coral apartment.

The blast was so powerful, police say it blew off 31-year-old Justin McHenry’s arms from the elbow down. Authorities say the apartment’s door and windows were also blown out.

There are still a lot of unknowns, like what exactly exploded in that apartment.

Neighbors who spoke to WINK News say they are worried about the lack of information.

We have reached out to the Cape Coral Police Department numerous times asking for updates practically every day. They refuse to release anymore information, only saying they are waiting on lab results from evidence taken from the scene.

WINK News called Cape Coral Mayor Marni Sawicki who declined an interview, saying she hasn’t been briefed on the investigation.

We also reached to the FDLE, FBI and ATF. All three say they are not involved in this investigation.

WINK News spoke off camera to McHenry’s friend and neighbor who says McHenry was curious and wanted to see if he could build a firework. The neighbor also says McHenry is a great guy and was not making bombs.

The Cape Coral Police Department says they will release more information in a press conference, but there is no time frame on when that will take place.
