Humane society to make push for Cape Coral shelter

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – The city of Cape Coral is days away from being one step closer to getting its first animal shelter. That is, if the City Council approves the Gulf Coast Humane Society’s proposal.

Monday, the Humane Society will present its plan to council members.

“I’m excited and nervous, it’s a big deal for us,” said executive director Jennifer Galloway. “It’s a plan a year in the making.”

Right now the Humane Society only has one shelter, located off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Fort Myers.

“We’re hoping that our supporters come out and let the city and the councilmen know that they are in full support of having Gulf Coast Humane Society in Cape Coral. They really want all the resources in their own city, they don’t want to have to cross the bridge to adopt a pet or to surrender their pet or for low cost affordable care,” said Galloway.

One of the proposed locations for the shelter is at an empty lot next to Sun Splash Family Waterpark.

If the City Council approves the plan, Galloway says the biggest obstacle will be fundraising. The estimated cost of the project is $2 million, which the Humane Society hopes to fund entirely through donations and grant money.
