Long time Estero High coach and athletic director dies

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Estero community is coming together after the passing of Estero High Coach and Athletic Director, Jeff Sommer.The Lee County School District told WINK News Sommer passed away suddenly Saturday morning at the FHSAA state track meet in Jacksonville.

“There are no words to express how deeply saddened the Estero family is over the loss of Jeff – he leaves us a legacy of love, leadership and passion that will endure forever in the many lives he touched,” said Estero High Principal, Clayton Simmons

Earlier in the day, the Estero girls 4 x 800 relay team won the state title. District spokesperson, Amity Chandler, said that win was, “a lasting testament to Coach Sommer’s leadership and commitment to his students and athletes.”

Saturday the show of support was overwhelming. Ester Fire Rescue tweeted, “The members of EFR would like to extend our condolences to the staff, students and families of Estero High on the passing of Coach Sommer.”

Meanwhile, others tweeted, “thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Jeff Sommer, the Athletics Director and CC coach at Estero HS,” @Erich_Ladwig.

“#SommersStrong Honestly can’t imagine what Estero will be like without you,” @SierraEngdahl.

Coach Sommer has worked with students and athletes for more than 30 years.

Counselors will be available on campus for students and staff on Monday.
