New high school coming to Bonita Springs

FORT MYERS, Fla.- It’s  official– Lee County’s newest high school will be built in Bonita Springs.

The exact location is still undecided.

District Superintendent Dr. Nancy Graham, recommended to the school board that the new high school should be built in Bonita and wants the doors to open by the 2018-2019 school year.

The school board agreed.

“We are going to do it right, they are going to have the best location, from the briefing we had today have the best academic plans, it will be another flagship high school,” said board member Steven Teuber.

Now district officials can start talking to Bonita land owners about buying property for the new school.
Earlier this month, WINK News told you about a plot of land the district owns on Tower Road in Bonita Springs as well as another site of interest in Estero.

“That property is very, very close to Estero High School, Three Oaks Middle, Three Oaks Elementary. The whole idea about creating schools is to create more capacity where you need it,” said Graham.

The district must find a suitable piece of land in Bonita by the end of December.

At first the board wanted to open the new school a year earlier, but then decided to delay the project and start with portable classrooms at Estero High School for freshman of the new high school.

“We are going to put a school in Bonita unless there is absolutely no properties,” said Teuber.
