ESTERO, Fla.- Step by step, hundreds of people gathered in Estero to fight for a cure.

“To be out here, to see all these people, it’s a beautiful morning the sun is out, and 3.1 miles, who can’t do that,” said Wendy Hodgson, an MS patient.

Jeanette Racia, also an MS patient, adds “it’s unique for everyone, and you just have to remember you may have it but it doesn’t have you.”

“We’re here to raise awareness were here to raise money, we’re here to make peoples lives better,” said WINK News anchor Stacey Adams who kicked off the event.

A 5k walk to raise a money for research.

“That’s how we fund research and that’s how we fund programs, and every little bit helps,” said Karen Dresbach, President of the National MS Society of Southwest Florida.

Dresbach says it’s estimated 8,000 people in south Florida have multiple sclerosis, also known as MS. It’s a disease that attacks the central nervous system.

“Paralysis, blindness, cognitive issues, bladder issues, fatigue is a big issue, pain,” said Dresbach.

Some days are better than others, but even when the bad ones start to outnumber the good, that doesn’t stop people like Hodgson and Racia from fighting.

“You do absolutely what is necessary everyday,” said Hodgson. “And you don’t get deterred.”
