20 local high school students from Cape Coral and Ft. Myers learned first hand the dangers of driving while distracted. The teens participated in Allstate’s Action Against Distraction Teen Driver Challenge at the German American Social Club this past weekend in Cape Coral. On a closed course, teen drivers attempted behaviors such as texting, making phone calls, eating, and interacting with rowdy passengers while driving. In addition, the students learned emergency braking and other advanced driver skills to avoid accidents. Car crashes are the number one killer of teens claiming 5,000 young lives every year. Another 300,000 teens are injured each year. 77 percent of teen fatality crashes are due to driver error and speeding with distractions playing a significant role. Eliminating distractions in the car can help save lives. Allstate’s Action Against Distraction Campaign is designed to raise awareness and inspire teens to become safe driving advocates in their schools and communities.
