MEDICAL ID TATTOOING ON THE RISE

People with certain medical conditions have worn medical alert ID’s for years to warn EMT’s and doctors of their diseases or allergies. There is a growing trend now with younger people displaying tattoos as an alternative medic alert. They won’t accidentally fall off and they don’t have to remember to put it on, and it follows in the footsteps of something now very cool and mainstream. But as more and more young people are diagnosed with diabetes, the medical alert tattoo is now becoming highly useful, successful and quite vogue. Even the older generation is turning to tattooing because of having to wear multiple alert ID’s.

By tattooing universal medical symbols on their skin, patients have turned to body art as a welcome alternative to the medical alert jewerly or ID’s used to inform medical personnel that they are dealing with a special medical condition. In the case of an individual not being able to communicate, a visibly placed tattoo would be hard to miss. Be sure to check with your physician first (diabetics) to see if you are able to get a tattoo.

Since Artistry Concepts in Englewood, Florida is one of the few studios in the country that offer medical ID tattooing, Wendy flew to Artistry Concepts from Maine to specifically receive her diabetic medical ID tattoo . A beautifully detailed diabetic medical symbol with a colorful "bracelet" of butterflies. These photos were taken immediately following...the stencil for the lettering is still visible. Once the tattoo has been washed, the lettering will be crisp and sharp.

I am the fortunate person to have this done and I am honored to be one of the first from Maine. When I am reminded of my disease by looking at my medical id I can smile because I am looking at a beautiful unique piece of artwork on my arm.

Shock.... FYI, a lot of the peoplehave organs that wouldn't qualify for transplanting anyways. So that boots outyour paranoid theory! CF, Diabetes, and other diseases, the tats can mean the difference between life and death for that individual.

Umm in my 11 years as an Emt / Firefighter, I have not once looked to see if someone was an organ donor. That isn't our job and isn't something we do.

The tattooing sounds like a good idea. I have a mitral valve implant and lost the card that carries the implant location, implant date, and serial number. But I'd want the marking placed somewhere out of normal view, possibly on the right buttock.

I don't understand the comments about organ harvesting or being an organ donor. Reread the article and you will see that this is about TATTOOING a medical ID symbol to help with identifying severe medical problems instead of wearing ID bracelets!

ok, so most of us think its a good idea to get a medical ID tattoo. Does any one know if it is a viable alternative? meaning will it replace the bracelet/ necklace and is it recognized by EMS?

Well, since this medical ID tattoo is placed on the underside of the wrist (where an EMT would check for a pulse!), then it would be hard to miss, RIGHT??? Hopefully our EMT's are familiar with medical symbols such as these.....

as for them letting you die to get your organs? total bs! this is a selfish person's excuse. think about the people helping you in an emergency, they are trying to save your life first!

Sara, the EMT stated they don't look to see if a patient is an organ donor. Period. They don't look anywhere because they don't care if you are of not. It's up to the hospital staff.
