Michelle Shin's whirlwind week

By Kirsten Olesen

Cape Coral teenager Michelle Shin is spending the week juggling a U.S. Women's Open qualifier, The Tayor Woodrow Junior, and high school Exams.

Cape Coral - While the competition was worrying about tomorrow's final round at the Taylor Woodrow Junior Invitational, Michelle Shin was thinking about a different kind of final. Final Exams.

"Yesterday, I took history, and today I'm gonna take geometry," Shin explained after the second round of the tournament. "They're letting me take one each day then I take two on the fifteenth."

Exams are enough to keep any high school sophomore busy. Add on an (unsuccessful) attempt to qualify for the US Women's open on Monday, and a three round junior tournament, and you have one exhausting week.

Shin says, "I sleep everywhere. In the car. At home. It's pretty much just sleeping and eating."

Weeks like this one aren't exactly uncommon for Shin, who's one of the state's top junior golfers. In fact, she has a system for balancing school and golf.

"I got prepared for my final exams two weeks before."

Shin says that once she gets on the course, she doesn't even think about the schoolwork. "Then I study in the car for ten minutes and then take my exam."

So after 400 miles, 90 holes of golf, and a handful of final exams, you might think Shin will get to slow down after this week.

"Yeah, right!" Shin laughs, "I'm going to Kentucky on the 15th right after I take my final exam. Maybe next week after I come back from Kentucky, I can rest."

Shin leads the Taylor Woodrow Junior by two strokes. But don't expect her to pick up an award after tomorrow's final round. She'll already be on her way to another exam.
