A Family Through Football

FORT MYERS, Fla.- Most nights with the Owens' family are filled with laughs and fun times. Things Jean-Carlos Oceant never thought he could have.

"Waking up every morning I was scared," said J.C. "I didn't know what was going to happen. Didn't know where I was going to be. Didn't know who I was going to see"

Jean-Carlos,now a stand out defensive end for the Bishop Verot football team, faced troubled situations at home everyday. But he was able to find his escape,on the football field...

"It gave me time to get away from home. Time to just focus on something else and not my home life."

When Bishop Verot's Freshman football coach, Dave Owens, first met J.C., the only thing he remembered was how funny he look in his pads.

"He was kinda funny running out to the field," said Owens when he first saw J.C. "But to be honest as the season went on, I could tell he was a special young man. Something was unique about him"

It took a while for coach Owens to learn about the problems Jean-Carlos was facing home. J.C. was moved from his home to a children's home in December of 2007. That's when coach Owens stepped in.

"I new something was up," said Owens. "So as soon as it happened, we (Dave and his wife Jacque) just knew that this was something we had to do"

"I was in a children's home and he came and got me out of there and told me I can come live with him," said J.C.

Dave and Jacque Owens have three children of their own, two girls and a boy. When their children found out about the new addition to their home, they were shocked.

"I was just like, ' wow '. Like ' where did this come from?'. They (Dave and Jacque) didn't really tell me too much about what happened but I'm thinking, ' are we going to be real close?' and we (J.C and his new family) became really good brother and sister relationship"

"I don't' have to worry about anything anymore," said Jean-Carlos. "I know I'm taken care of. If I need something, like if I really need it, then i got it. I can do things now"

Jean-Carlos has been apart of the Owens family for two years now. J.C. said giving him a chance he never had.

"A chance to just... be a kid."

A chance to be a part...of a family.
