COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - This year's South Carolina Statehouse Christmas Tree has come up a bit short this year
This year's tree does not rise above the roughly 25-foot Confederate soldiers' monument on the front lawn.
The Columbia Garden Club typically purchases trees from North Carolina but chose this year to take a bargain from a site in Pennsylvania. Shipping difficulties had led to a damaged tree with broken branches and bare spots.
Volunteers decorate the tree each year. The Columbia Garden Club has been the primary purchaser of the tree since 2003.
The club declared that they do not prefer the trees from South Carolina since they are not the size or shape they prefer.
