KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) - The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says a man who led a deputy on a high-speed pursuit told investigators he was sleeping, not driving, during the chase.
According to reports, deputies didn't believe Anthony Fernandez's claim that someone else was behind the wheel. They arrested the 49-year-old Key West man on charges of fleeing and eluding police, running a red light, speeding and driving with a suspended license.
A report states that after Fernandez stopped driving a 2005 black Dodge Ram pickup truck during Monday morning's chase, he got out of the driver's side of the car, ran to the passenger side, opened the door, and walked slowly to the front.
Fernandez told investigators that a friend was driving during the chase and then fled the scene while he slept.
