Contraband candy = Skittles suspension

Connecticut 8th-grader suspended for buying Skittles in school, violating district wellness policy.

By The Associated Press

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Contraband candy has led to big trouble for an eighth-grade honors student in Connecticut.

Michael Sheridan was stripped of his title as class vice president, barred from attending an honors student dinner and suspended for a day after buying a bag of Skittles from a classmate.

School spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo says the New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a district wide school wellness policy.

Michael's suspension has been reduced from three days to one, but he has not been reinstated as class vice president.

He says he didn't realize his candy purchase was against the rules, but he did notice the student selling the Skittles on Feb. 26 was being secretive.

The people who suspended him need a reality check! There are more important things to worry about than a kid buying a bag of Skittles in school.

Note to omg - The health Nazi's are typically Democrat. The Republicans are security Nazi's. The only difference is the focus. By their tools shall we know them.

This is completely ridiculous! I can't believe authorities can suspend children who just wanted to sweet up their lives!!!

Yeah, well it's well known that Skittles are a "doorway" sweet. Next would come Snicker, Three Muskateers, the dreaded Almond Joy and finally the kid would be hooked on the awful, life destroying and addictive Cheescake. Thank you New Haven for protecting our children from one more unimpotant danger.

Who are the people that write these rules and punishments? Skittle Nazi?

Sounds like the school board has nothing better to do with its time or are just a bunch of Nazi goons showing their power verses teaching the students why good eating habits are important. The one for suspenion is the candy (drug)seller. Come on get a life school board, how many of you have broken the real driving or tax laws just this past year?? Of course, you tell your famioly it is okay to break these laws.

No wonder students in this country come in LAST in every subject compared to students in other countries: Public school administrations are too busy focusing on irrelevant matters like this. This is absolutely ridiculous.
