PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - A Bradenton man was caught in the act of burglarizing an apartment. Not only was he caught in the act by a video security camera but it was his grandmother's apartment he was robbing.
A Charlotte County Sheriff's deputy arrested 23-year-old Deangelo Lamont Carter Tuesday for burglary of a Sunshine Villas apartment in Port Charlotte. Carter's grandmother, Evelyn Byrd, called CCSO to report Carter was suspected of entering her apartment at 21150 Gertrude Avenue through a side window and took a laundry basket full of clothing items valued at $300. Byrd approached the manager, Christopher Spencer, and told him what happened.
According to authorities, Spencer reviewed the apartment complex security tapes and it showed Carter entering the apartment and exiting carrying an arm load of items and a laundry basket containing clothes. Byrd identified her grandson as the man in the video burglarizing her apartment. Spencer also identified Carter and knew him by name.
Officials say Byrd asked Spencer to go to an apartment in the building, where Carter may have gone and retrieve her stolen property. Spencer went to the apartment and found the front door open. He observed the stolen clothing and laundry basket next to Carter. Spencer asked that the items be returned to Byrd. Officials say Carter became enraged and punched Spencer in the jaw.
The tenant of the apartment, where Carter was found, said Carter asked if he could leave his clothes there. Authorities have returned the stolen items back to his grandmother.
Carter was taken to the Charlotte County Jail and is charged with felony Burglary, felony Petit Larceny and Battery. Officials say this is his 7th arrest in Charlotte County and 20th record.
