VIEWERS VIEW: Is "Spring Awakening" too risque for audiences?

By WINK News

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Nudity, sex, and violence. A musical at Barbara B. Mann is leaving some audience members shocked.

"Spring Awakening" is about teenage self discovery and some say it is too risque.

Spring Awakening, set in 1891 Germany, deals with teens as they learn about sex - and the cast doesn't hold anything back. The show includes nudity and simulated sex acts.

Actor Taylor Trensch plays Moritz. He said, "It's so shocking and really in your face, but really what it is - is honest. Something like this has never been told so honestly on a stage before."

That's getting mixed reactions.

Debbie Winsor said, "A lot of people were edgy, nervous, thinking 'Oh my God, this is happening.'"

Ron Bradley said, "I'm 73-years-old. I've seen everything."

Joyce Clarkson said, "There's nothing wrong with being risque, nothing wrong at all - but, it was just a bit too graphic."

Cast members said sometimes audience members walk out... and at least one became vocal during a performance in Fort Myers.

Debbie Winsor said, "There was a gentleman in front of me and at one point when the two men were together, he yelled out and I just felt that he couldn't deal with it, and that's the problem. People are burying their heads like ostriches."

Cast member Steffi D. said the story can't be told any other way.

She said, "We couldn't make this story work if the sexuality wasn't part of it. A lot of people find it shocking, and we get people walking out of the theater. That happens."

Spring Awakening runs till Sunday January 31st at Barbara B. Mann.
