Trial underway for man accused of brutal Lehigh Acres murder

By Nick Spinetto, WINK News

Lee County - Three years ago a baby covered in blood was left alone at a crime scene.

Just feet away were his dead mother and grandmother.

The two women were stabbed to death.

Now their suspected killer is on trial.

31 year-old Juan Mendez is on trial for second degree murder.

His estranged wife, 19 year old Whitney Mendez and her mother 49 year-old Lori Stone.

The two women were murdered at their Leigh Acres home in July 2006.

The first day of the trial started Thursday.

It focused on jury selection, which lasted more than eight hours.

It's been a tedious task, partly because of all the publicity surrounding this case.

Juan Mendez appeared calm in front of the 59 potential jurors.

The jurors were questioned about their knowledge of the case, which mainly came from TV and newspapers.

The details of the case galvanized Southwest Florida for days.

Both women were stabbed to death.

Whitney and Juan's two year old son, Javon was found sitting outside in a high chair covered in blood.

He was dehydrated and outside for 9 hours, while his mother and grandmother lie dead inside the home.

Today the boy is okay and living with a foster family.

It's these details that caught national attention.

The network TRU TV is in Fort Myers covering the trial.

Like WINK News, they will follow every minute of the trial.

The trial is expected to last a week.

Dozens of witnesses will testify, including CSI officers who found Mendez's DNA on the murder weapon and under the fingernails of one of the victims.

Thursday morning, the judge ruled jurors will also hear about the domestic violence injunction Whitney had against Juan.

This ruling allows Whitney's friend to testify.

She was the last person to talk to Whitney on the phone.

In that conversation is when Whitney allegedly said Juan was coming over to pick up their son.

Minutes later, there was a struggle on the other end of the line, Whitney was heard screaming-- then the line went dead.

Juan Mendez was originally charged with first degree murder.

But despite the evidence a grand jury failed to indict him.

Mendez was later re-arrested and is now charged with second degree murder.

He faces life in prison.
