Woman dead in Lee County house fire

By Jeremiah Jacobsen & Maggie Crane, WINK News

FORT MYERS SHORES, Fla. - A woman is dead after a fire at Fort Myers Shores home on Labor Day.

Authorities say a man emerged from the home on Weber Boulevard, yelling that a woman was still inside. A Lee County deputy was first on the scene, but the sheriff's office says the heat and smoke was too intense for the deputy to make it inside. The woman was unable to make it out and died at the scene.

Neighbors say the people living at the home were husband and wife Roy and Phyllis Huneke. Authorities have not released their names, but David Casey says he's lived across the street from them for 15 years.

A couple renting the Hunekes' efficiency apartment, which is attached to the home, tells WINK News the Hunekes' bedroom is completely blackened and burned. From the outside, fire damage is mostly invisible.

The State Fire Marshall's Office is investigating the cause of the official cause of the fire, but neighbors say authorities told them that Phyllis had fallen asleep while smoking in bed. Casey says the elderly woman had emphysema.
