COLLIER COUNTY - Isolated crimes may not be what they seem. Local law enforcement officials are learning that criminal networks have ties to the area.
It was just a regular day of patrol last thursday for Master Officer Steve Walden when the unexpected happened.
"A lady approached me and gave me a piece of paper that had a tag number and a vehicle description on it," says Master Officer Walden.
The woman had witnessed someone pulling on car door handles at the Coastland Mall parking lot. Walden says he found the suspicious vehicle with six people inside and stolen items from someone else's car.
"These six individuals they just arrested are going to be tied in to numerous other crimes," says Robert Taylor of S.A.T.G.I.N. - South American Theft Group Intelligence Network. "I mean numerous."
Taylor says these accused criminals are just a few of the thousands of South American Groups that run scams like this across the country and around the world.
"They hit everywhere," says Taylor. "Nobody's immune from this, no matter what the wealth is."
S.A.T.G.I.N. Trains law enforcement officials, like Naples Police, and helps them to share information with other agencies.
"These people are armed and dangerous," says Taylor.
That's why authorities like Master Officer Walden are now on the lookout for these groups, in an effort to keep them behind bars.
S.A.T.G.I.N. will start training the Collier County Sheriff's Office in a couple of weeks. S.A.T.G.I.N. is based in Fort Lauderdale and is the only law enforcement organization of its kind.
