NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. - The search for a gunman continues late Sunday night.
Early Sunday evening, more than two thousand people, including several sheriff's deputies, were at a rodeo when a gunman opened fired in a crowded parking lot. It happened on Palm Creek Drive in North Fort Myers. The bullets hit three cars.
"It's very serious situation," said John Sheehan, a spokesman for the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
Sheehan says two of the cars hit by bullets belonged to sheriff's deputies, who were patrolling the area at the time. Deputies were not in the car, but several police dogs were, they were not hurt. Sheehan did say the deputies cars were damaged from the bullets. The third car belonged to someone else.
The shooting happened at the Mexican rodeo in the Lee County Posse Arena in North Fort Myers.
"The fact no one was in these vehicles doesn't matter. Someone could have been. A bullet could have ricochet and hit somebody."
More than two thousand people were at the rodeo. Many were children.
"It's a family event. You have to assume people of all ages are in there," said Sheehan.
Julie Toscano and her kids among them. "I kept hearing people say gunshots. I didn't hear anything," Toscano said. She and her family ran for safety as sheriff's deputies canvassed the area by air and foot looking for the gunman, who immediately took off is his own car.
Toscano says after the shots were fired people inside the rodeo started to panic. "Stuff happened. Fighting started going on. Now we gotta leave," she said.
As people leave, deputies searched cars and interviewed witnesses trying to figure out a motive and if there is more than one shooter.
"We're not certain right now if there are other people involved or riding in the vehicle," John Sheehan said.
The shooters' vehicle is described as a grey Dodge pick-up truck with a dark colored topper.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
