Legal delays to adopt abused animals

By WINK News

SOUTH FORT MYERS, Fla. - The animals at the center of a large animal abuse case are stuck in limbo. More than 50 dogs are being held at Lee County Animal Services in South Fort Myers. Along with those dogs, about two dozen cats, two chickens and a rabbit are stuck in a legal waiting game.

The animals were seized by Lee County Animal Services after living in reportedly terrible conditions. The animals are not up for adoption yet because their owner Carrie Cagata is still the legal owner of the animals.

A spokesperson for Lee County Animal Services says the county may have to go through a judge to transfer custody. Lee County Animal Services wants Cagata to sign-over custody of the animals, but they have not been able to track down Cagata.
