UPDATE: Plane crash pilot released from hospital

By WINK News

GASPARILLA ISLAND, Fla. - The pilot of a plane that crashed in the Gulf coast of Gasparilla Island around 11:00 a.m. Friday, has been treated and released from the Charlotte Regional Medical Center.

The pilot is 69-year-old Glen Koedding of Punta Gorda

The crash happened near 4043 Shore Lane on Gasparilla Island, just north of Boca Grande.

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office tells WINK News another aircraft saw the small plane submerged and someone swimming to shore.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office also assisted with the investigation. Police say a single-engine aircraft was submerged approximately 100 feet offshore.

WINK News spoke with three men who were remodeling the Shore Lane home, near the crash site. They say they saw the fixed-wing airplane fly low, only two to three feet above the water, and crash.

One of the men went to call police, while the other two grabbed a surfboard and dove in to rescue Koedding.

"He jumped out of the plane and was facing that way yelling for help. He didn't even know where he was, he couldn't tell which was the shore was," explained Eric Stone.

The men say Koedding told them he may of had a stroke, but he wasn't sure.

"He just couldn't see at all," said Powell, "So, he brought the plane in as slow as he could and just crashed it right there."

Koedding was taken to Charlotte Regional Medical Center for treatment and released.

"It just blows my mind you can't believe it you've got to think it' hard enough to land a plane anywhere and this guy just landed it with wheels and tires in the water and didn't hurt himself," said Troy Powell.

Police say the aircraft is registered in Punta Gorda. The FAA has been notified about the crash.

The men say they don't consider themselves heroes, they were just glad to be at the right place at the right time.

Powell told WINK News, 'I'm glad I was here to help the guy out. What are the odds people are going to be right here? Basically, we are here a lot and don't see anybody on the beaches."

These are truly the American heroes. No hesitation, no what about me, just brave, concerned and caring human beings looking out, not for themselves but for another human being in danger and in need. I sincerely appreciate their help, bravery and kindness. I didn't know what direction to swim to get to the shore, I was about to swim toward the horizon because I saw brighter light in that direction, but their call to me and their insistence that I wait for them, that they were coming for me was..
